"The Sky Above Us"
by Sarah Sundin
by Sarah Sundin
Numbed by grief and harboring shameful secrets, Lt. Adler Paxton ships to England with the US 357th Fighter Group in 1943. Determined to become an ace pilot, Adler battles the German Luftwaffe in treacherous dogfights in the skies over France as the Allies struggle for control of the air before the D-day invasion.
Violet Lindstrom wanted to be a missionary, but for now she serves in the American Red Cross, where she arranges entertainment for the men of the 357th in the Aeroclub on base and sets up programs for local children. Drawn to the mysterious Adler, she enlists his help with her work and urges him to reconnect with his family after a long estrangement.
Despite himself, Adler finds his defenses crumbling when it comes to Violet. But D-day draws near. And secrets can't stay buried forever.
Bestselling author Sarah Sundin returns readers to the shores of Normandy, this time in the air, as the second Paxton brother prepares to face the past--and the most fearsome battle of his life.

I love Sarah Sundin's books because the History is so accurate. Her details are so very good that they paint a picture in your mind of the planes, and the country where the story takes place.
Violet wants to be a missionary, but she must go as a couple and her fiance has lost his dream of serving God in exchange for money. So Violet joins the Red Cross under the impression she will be able to serve the children of war. But that is not how things are and she finds herself on an airbase serving the pilots who live there. She falls for one tall and handsome pilot, Adler Paxton.
Adler Paxton, with a whole lot of baggage in his past. But with the help of Violet and Nick (whom Adler serves as his wingman) Adler comes to Christ. But even though Adler tries to tell Violet, he is not good enough for her, she has already fallen for him and because Christ has forgiven him, she can too. But the past comes to haunt him and Violet finds out just how much baggage Adler has been carrying. Someone has been stealing from the Red Cross supplies and the director is holding Violet responsible and has even accused her of being the thief.
Will Violet be allowed to stay and determine who the thief is? Can she bring herself to forgive Adler for his wicked past? I enjoyed the book except for the romance aspect. Sarah is such a fantastic author that she doesn't need the sexual aspects to come up with a fantastic book.
I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
