"The Mistress of Tall Acre"
by Laura Frantz
With the American Revolution finally over, Sophie Menzies hopes that things will go back to normal soon. She has done everything that she could to keep her family home from being destroyed by the British, and now she hopes her brother will return soon to help her take care of things. She hopes that the people in town will finally stop shunning her and blaming her for her father’s betrayal to the colonies. When it becomes obvious that she will never be accepted by the town, she is afraid that she will lose her house and everything that she has fought to protect during the war.

General Seamus Ogilvy had finally returned home after fighting for his country. He soon learns that he is a widower and that his brother and sister-in-law will not let him have his daughter back. He takes his daughter back from his in-laws and tries to rebuild his life, but when his daughter doesn’t seem to like him or trust him, he does not know what he should do. However, his daughter has fallen in love with Miss Sophie Menzies, his next door neighbor. He is at his wit’s end and doesn’t know what he should do.

When Sophie is receives notice that her house is going to be confiscated as government property, she has to decide what she will do and where she will live. When General Ogilvy comes to her with a proposition of a marriage of convenience for both of them, she has no choice but to accept his proposal. As they are trying to get to know one another and fight the growing attraction between them, someone begins to threaten them. Will they figure it out in time or will their family be ripped apart forever?

“The Mistress of Tall Acre” is a very captivating book. I fell in love with the characters from the very beginning and could not wait to see what would happen to them. I found myself being transferred to the late 1700s, and I felt as though I was really there. The book is filled with intrigue, love, and triumph over tragedies. I could not put this book, and I would highly recommend this book to my family and friends.

"A Noble Masquerade"
by Kristi Ann Hunter

Miranda Hawthorne has been given “lady lessons” since she was a young girl. She acts like a perfect lady would on the outside, but on the inside she longs to bold and carefree. Ever since the day of her eighth birthday, she has kept her true feelings locked up inside her. Looking for a way to express those feelings, she begins to write to her brother’s best friend, the Duke of Marshington, and tell him what she truly thinks and feels. She never sends the letters, but just putting them down on paper helps her cope with her true feelings and the need to share them with someone. When one of her letters is mistakenly mailed, she becomes mortified and embarrassed that she ever wrote them in the first place. When she receives a reply from the mysterious Duke himself, she is humiliated. She knows that she will never actually ever meet the Duke as he has been in hiding for several years, so she throws caution to the wind and begins a correspondence with the Duke. After several months of correspondence with Lady Miranda, the Duke decides he wants to return to society and court her properly. When Lady Miranda meets the Duke in person, she is utterly humiliated and angry that she wants nothing to do with the Duke. The Duke tries all he can think of to win the heart of Lady Miranda, but she is to upset and stubborn to acknowledge him. Will the Duke be able to convince Miranda that he truly does care about her and love her, or will the strain on their relationship be too much of an obstacle to overcome?

I must admit that this would not have been a book that I would have purchased for myself, and that would have been a will shame as I loved this book. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I fell in love with the characters from the very beginning, and I felt like I actually knew them. Kristi Ann Hunter grabbed my attention from the start and held me riveted until the very end. The book is filled with suspense, danger, and romance. I would recommend this book to everyone

"Last Chance Hero"
by Cathleen Armstrong
Dr. Jessica MacLeod is finally seeing her dream of becoming a doctor in a small town come true. She arrives in Last Chance, New Mexico and opens her office on Main Street. The folks in Last Chance are glad that Last Chance is finally getting its own doctor, but they are all reluctant to give the new doctor a chance. Especially since she is an outsider, doesn’t like spicy foods, and hates football. Jessica is surprised to find that she is facing so much resistance and doesn’t understand what the big deal is about football and chili peppers anyway.

Andy Ryan, local hometown football hero, has returned home after playing in the NFL to coach the high school football team. He is excited to be back home, but when everyone starts talking about the “Glory Days” and saying that they can’t wait until their football team is restored to its former glory, he is afraid that the people will not be able to stop living in the past and look forward towards the present team. He constantly reminds the people that he is here to help the boys on the football team and that the past is in the past, but the folks in Last Chance keep insisting that he is the best thing that ever happened to Last Chance. When he meets Jessica, he is immediately drawn to her and the fact that she does not put him on a pedestal; however, when he discovers that she can’t stand football, he is a bit taken aback. Andy and Jessica hit it off, but will their differences over the game of football be too much for them to overcome or will they be able to find a common ground?

I had a hard time getting into this book. The book was well-written, but I found myself getting frustrated with Jessica and her attitude that she was always right. I liked all of the other people in the town and their stories, but Jessica grated on my nerves for some reason.

“The Sea Keeper’s Daughters” was a very interesting book to read. I learned things that I had never even heard of before. I was amazed to discover some of the things that the people in the Blue Ridge Mountains went through during the Depression and the many secrets that the mountains hold. Lisa Wingate did a terrific job at molding the Depression-era story and the modern day story together. I felt as if I was in Whitney’s shoes, and could not wait to find out what the next letter might hold.
